Who Is the CEO of Renesas?
Meet Hidetoshi Shibata
When people think about Renesas Electronics, they often think about advanced semiconductors powering automobiles, industrial equipment, IoT devices and other technologies. But behind this global semiconductor company is a leader with a rather unusual career journey: Hidetoshi Shibata, the President and CEO of Renesas Electronics Corporation.
Hidetoshi Shibata became CEO of Renesas in July 2019, after joining the company in 2013 as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO). As of 2026, he continues to serve as Director, Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO.
What makes Shibata particularly interesting is that he did not begin his career as a semiconductor engineer. He started his professional career in 1995 at Central Japan Railway Company, where he was involved in a major re-engineering project. Interestingly, he also obtained a license to drive Japan’s famous Shinkansen bullet trains.
He later moved into the world of finance and investment, working at MKS Partners, Merrill Lynch Japan Securities and the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan. These experiences gave him strong exposure to corporate restructuring, investment, business strategy and global management.
At Renesas, Shibata played an important role in transforming the company during a challenging period. He was involved in restructuring the business and subsequently helped lead major acquisitions, including Intersil, Integrated Device Technology (IDT), and Dialog Semiconductor. These acquisitions significantly expanded Renesas’ technology and global semiconductor portfolio.
Academically, Shibata holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Tokyo and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
His career demonstrates that leading a major semiconductor company is not only about technical knowledge. It also requires business strategy, financial understanding, global leadership and the ability to transform an organization.
For anyone interested in Renesas, Shibata’s journey offers an inspiring lesson: sometimes, the most effective technology leaders are those who combine engineering, business and strategic thinking.
